2023 Can-Am Maverick and Defender Side by Side Lineup Review: WITH VIDEO

Updated 135HP Maverick X3 DS heads up Can-Am’s 2023 SXS Lineup

In 2022 Can-Am made significant updates to the two and four-seat Maverick X3 Turbo RR. Already the leader in power in the turbo segment, horsepower was pumped up an additional 5hp from 195 to 200.  Their super smooth-engaging, roller bearing equipped pDrive, primary clutch was added to the continuously variable transmission. Various parts of the chassis and suspension components were strengthened and after 750 hard miles on our test unit we have zero mechanical failures to report. Subscribe for our upcoming Maverick X3 Turbo RR Test.

For 2023, Can-Am is back at it, this time looking to further separate themselves from the competition in the mid-horsepower, 64” segment with their updated, 135hp Maverick X3 DS Turbo.

Updated 2023 Can-Am Maverick X3 DS Turbo

For 2023, both two and four-seat models of the 64” wide, mid HP  Maverick X3 DS Turbos gets a boost in power from 120 to 135 HP thanks to a new ECU and calibration, new turbo assembly and fuel injectors from the Turbo RR engine. The result is a 21% increase in horsepower and 23% more torque than its closest competitors which are all naturally aspirated. Can-Am smoother operating pDrive roller bearing equipped clutch was added to the DS Turbo’s CVT. It’s also claimed to be more durable.

Not just a horsepower leader at its price point, the Maverick X3 DS Turbo leads all of it’s 64” wide competitors in suspension with 20” of travel at both ends. It rides on 30” Maxxis Carnivore tires, on the large side for a 64” wide machine.

Starting at $21,599 for the two-seat Maverick X3 DS Turbo and $25,099 for the Maverick X3 Max DS Turbo, performance for the dollar appears to be off the chart. We’re hoping to test one out in 2023 to find out.

Included on all DPS Cab, Limited, Lone Star and XMR packages, the Defender’s front A-Arms have been redesigned for 2023. The new A-Arms are swept forward allowing for the use of 30” tires. The new A-Arms were beefed up with thicker enclosed upper arms. The new arms allow for an increase in suspension travel from 10 to 12”, accompanied by new shock calibration and a 15% thicker front sway bar. Defender Limited HD10 and Lone Star HD10 models come with new 30” XPS Trac Force tires.

For 2023 Defender X MR models are available from the factory with Can-Am’s half door package to help keep the elements out. They feature premium half doors with colorized panels, rear hinges for wide opening and ease of ingress/egress.

With a brand new Commander lineup in 2021, significant updates to their top-of-the-line 200HP Maverick Turbo RRs in 2022, an updated mid-horsepower Maverick Turbo X3 DS and updated suspension for the Defenders for the coming model year Can-Am’s side by side lineup seems to offer more than ever for every type of enthusiast for 2023.
